Parallel Forum to COP 16 Adopts the Cancun Declaration.
MEXICO, December 11th, 2010.- The President of Bolivia, Evo Morales, closed the Global Forum of the organizations of Via Campesina for Life, Environmental and Social Justice, which concluded with the adoption of the Declaration of Cancun.
This meeting, parallel to the Climate Change Conference COP 16, was attended by 300 small farmer and indigenous organizations from 76 countries.
The approved document supports the claim of the Declaration of Cochabamba last April, in defense of Mother Earth, which claims environmental justice from transnational corporations that have seized the world's natural resources.
The Bolivian statesman, who was accompanied by Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez, described the agreements adopted at the Forum of Via Campesina a ‘Cancun-bombshell’ for life on the planet, given the lack of consensus on the Framework Convention of the Parties to the UN on Climate Change (COP 16), at the so-called Cancun-charade, referring to the failure of COP 15 in Copenhagen, Denmark.
For his part, the Cuban Foreign Minister said the ALBA countries and the Group of 77 plus China, came to Cancun to demand the validity of the Kyoto Protocol and to avoid the poor states being charged the full weight to address climate change alone.
Rodriguez said Cuba demands solutions that respect the rights of Mother Earth, while accusing the World Bank and IMF as being the main culprits of global warming. (Cubaminrex-Granma)
