Cuba at UN Reiterates Willingness to Combat Terrorism.
UNITED NATIONS, May 16, 2011.- Cuba at the UN reiterated its willingness to cooperate with any country, including the United States, in preventing and fighting international terrorism, on the basis of mutual respect and sovereign equality.
This position was reaffirmed on Monday before the Security Council by the Permanent Representative of Cuba to the United Nations, Pedro Nuñez Mosquera, in a session devoted to issues of fighting against terrorism.
The diplomat highlighted the work of the Caribbean island in that matter and recalled the terrorist attacks suffered by the Cuban people, which have caused death to 3,478 people, and disability and damages to other 2,000 people.
In this regard, he highlighted the 13 international agreements signed by Cuba in this area and its compliance with the resolutions of the General Assembly and the Security Council.
The ambassador referred to the book "Voices from the Other Side. An Oral History of Terrorism against Cuba," by Canadian Keith Bolender, which collects stories of more than 50 years of terrorism against Cuba.
The Cuban representative claimed that all anti-Cuban actions have the approval of the United States government and cited the judicial farce followed against Posada Carriles in El Paso, Texas.
In contrast, he mentioned the case of five Cuban antiterrorists imprisoned in U.S. jails since 1998 for trying to prevent terrorist acts against Cuba from U.S. territory. (Cubaminrex-PL)
