Importance of the Non Aligned Movement.

The Movement of Non Aligned Nations has commemorated half a century of
existence.

During the days of the world’s division in military blocks and opposite
ideologies –one side the United States and NATO allies and on the other
side the former Soviet Union and the eastern European socialist community-
leaders from several Third World nations including Cuba decided to create
the Non Alignment in 1961.

As its name indicates, it was a block of growing nations many of them
recently liberated from colonialism and neo colonial dependency,
interested in carrying out their self determination and insert itself in
the world with equal rights alongside the powerful countries.

Cuba followed with serenity, enthusiasm and strengthened the program of
the struggle and construction of a new and just world.

Cuba has not only chaired in more than one occasion the Movement of Non
Aligned Nations but has done so with precision and profound revolutionary
ethics before the problems that it has had to assume in name of the
institution.

Programs destined in strengthening South-South cooperation thanks to
Cuba’s initiative as well as intensive work in solidarity among its
members, work in favor of the struggle for the liberation of many Third
World nations.

Cuba’s role at the non aligned movement was important after the collapse
of the former Soviet Union and the socialist community in Eastern Europe
when progressive and left wing forces became confused, frustrated and
discouraged.

The destructive imperial media campaign attempted to make everyone think
that history had come to an end and capitalism had been victorious.
However, from the island’s example of resistance, the Cuban Revolution
showed the Third World nations the lies of the ill intentioned propaganda.

In any case, the peculiar way of understanding and assuming the
construction of socialism was buried; far opposing its essence of justice
and freedom, create new more realistic, democratic and universal channels.
 
The Movement of Non Aligned Nations will assume more crucial performances
to avoid the implementation of the asphyxiating imperial hegemony.

This is the task that the Movement of Non Aligned Nations is attempting to
carry out half a century after its creation as a homage to the long,
difficult and constancy which became the struggle of the poor and
exploited peoples that make up an important part of humanity.
