Jose Marti Honoured in Sydney
Australia, February 4th, 2010. On the occasion of the anniversary of Jose Marti’s birth, the General Consulate of Cuba, friendship societies, social and political organizations as well as trade unions and friends of Cuba, gathered in Sydney to honour this Heroe of Cuba’s Independence.
Latin-American and Australian friends met at Plaza Iberoamericana, opposite the Marti monument, to show they respect and admiration for Cuba’s National Heroe and motivating force behind the Moncada Fortress Attack.
The gathering was first addressed by Dr. Rita Mallia, lawyer and representative of the Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Confederation of Unions of the State of New South Wales. Dr. Mallia commented on Marti’s work and his teachings, which continue to guide the Cuban people in their daily demonstration of sovereignty, independence and resistance whilst confronting the North American empire.
Comrade Victor Hugo Munoz, on behalf of the Latin American Forum, highlighted the Independence path led by the Cuban Heroe, who travelled beyond Cuba, carrying out meritorious work in Uruguay, Argentina, Mexico, Guatemala and other Latin American countries, advocating for independence, development and the universal right to an education and equality. Victor Hugo remembered Marti’s famous phrase, “be cultured to be free”, which made the Cuban Revolution possible in the face of an unjust and cruel blockade by the USA.
Dr. Tim Anderson, professor with Sydney University, demanded the freedom of the Five Cuban Heroes unjustly imprisoned in USA jails for defending their country against US terrorist acts.
Dr. Meredith Berghman, former President of the Senate of the State of New South Wales expressed her respect and admiration for Marti, whose teachings inspired Fidel and his companions in their struggle against the then oppressive Cuban dictatorship; teachings which have been fully put into practice during the Cuban Revolution.
Comrade Peter Weitzel, President of the Australia Cuba Friendship Society, spoke on the respect and admiration Cubans feel for Marti, who lived and gave his life for Cuba and to prevent the USA from taking control of the Americas.
The Bolivian Consul also attended this commemoration.
