Solidarity meeting in Suriname for Cuban five heroes

SURINAME, September 13, 2007.- Organized by the Friendship Committee Suriname –Cuba there was a meeting in Paramaribo to express solidarity with the Cuban five heroes who are unjustly imprisoned in the United States.

Surinamese and Cubans demanded the immediate release of Gerardo, Antonio, Fernando, Ramon and René who are an example of the fight for justice and peace in the world.

With this activity, Suriname joined the international journey of solidarity with the Cuban five. This journey will last until October 8.

Nadia Raveles, President of the Friendship Committee Suriname-Cuba read a declaration of its members, in which they demand of the government of the United States the immediate release of these five men, who were fighting against terrorism, in defence of their mother country. Later they gave the declaration to the ambassador of Cuba in Suriname Andrés González Garrido, who was present at the solidarity meeting.

To show the support of the Surinamese people to the cause of the five, the Surinamese singer Ronald G. Brunings performed revolutionary songs and the popular Surinamese poet Sombra recited the well-known revolutionary poem ‘Dagorder’ of the Surinamese poet Marcel de Bruin.

In the meeting were present Surinamese parliamentarians, members of the Friendship Committee Suriname-Cuba, former students in Cuba, relatives of Surinamese students in Cuba, journalists, patients of Operation Miracle and Surinamese friends of Cuba. From the Cuban side the meeting was attended by members of the Cuban Medical Brigade, the team of specialists of Operation Miracle, social workers, working in the Energy Saving Project in Suriname and the staff of the Cuban diplomatic mission in Suriname.

Also present were the ambassador of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela in Suriname Francisco Simancas and his diplomatic staff.
