Cubans Receive Messages of Support from All Continents

CUBA, February 29, 2008.- Multiple demonstrations of confidence in the strength and continuity of the Cuban revolutionary process found an echo in the interactive online forum opened Tuesday in Havana by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Organizing Committee of the Cuba 2008 International Book Fair.

During two hours, messages were received from 47 countries —from North America to Australia—, dealing with different aspects related to the 50th anniversary of the Cuban Revolution and the recent announcement by President Fidel Castro of not seeking nor accepting the position of President of the country when the members of the National Assembly of the People’s Power (parliament) inaugurate a new legislature on Sunday.

Overwhelmingly, scholars and academics, social activists, students, and workers from a driver in Kenya to a civil servant from Argentina, a Chilean housewife, and a French office worker expressed their admiration for the historic dimension of Fidel’s work and thinking.

They also noted their confidence in the capability of new generations of Cubans to continue the revolutionary process and their solidarity with the people of a country that has to confront the imperialism’s hostility.

The Internet forum participants discussed the reflections posted from Havana by Ecuadorian-Mexican essayist Bolivar Echeverria; Galician writer Xose Neira Vilas; Italian-Spanish writer Carlo Frabetti’ Spanish anthropologist Irene Amador; Ecuadorian narrator and poet Raul Perez Torres; Spanish political analysts Pascual Serrano and Carlos Fernandez Liria, and Cuban intellectuals Fernando Martinez Heredia, Rolando Rodriguez, Miguel Barnet and Alpidio Alonso.
