Puerto Ricans Send Aid to Cuban Hurricane Victims

CUBA, December 4, 2008. Néstor Nazario, from Puerto Rico’s National Hostosiano Pro-Independence Movement (MINH), made the official delivery on December 3 of humanitarian aid collected in that Caribbean nation for the victims of recent hurricanes in Cuba.

The Puerto Rican patriot, in a ceremony held at Havana’s Friendship House, highlighted the massive popular movement the collection and sorting of this aid generated in his country, which showed the deep roots of fraternity and friendship existing between Puerto Rico and Cuba.

He stressed that the cargo is made up of food and clothing, and described the archipelago as the nation that most exemplifies solidarity in the world.

He also denounced the inhuman economic, commercial, and financial blockade of the United States against Cuba, which prevented the direct sending of this aid, since Puerto Rico, a virtual US colony, is submitted to US legislation.

He explained that, for these reason, they were forced to perform a triangular operation with the Dominican Republic, and that some of the collected products, like milk and water, will get spoiled.

The president of the Cuban Institute for Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP), Jorge Martí Martínez, thanked Puerto Ricans for this gesture and explained that the destructive force of the three hurricanes that recently hit Cuba, caused damages worth some 10 billion dollars.

He made reference to the enormous solidarity shown by many countries towards Cuba in view of this damage, and to the discipline and titanic work carried out by the Cuban people to recover from it.

Participating in the activity were, among others, MINH representatives and members of the left organizations accredited on the archipelago. (Cubaminrex- ACN)
