Philippines: Statement of Solidarity for the People of Cuba

We, the sponsoring and participating organizations and individuals attending the Solidarity Event for the Peoples of Cuba, DPR Korea and Bolivarian Venezuela , held at the University of the Philippines - Baguio on December 7, 2007 extend our warm and strong solidarity with the courageous Cuban people.

H.E. Jorge Rey Jimenez, Cuban Ambassador to the Philippines , has given us very comprehensive information about Cuba and its people, their conditions, and their resistance against US aggression.

We are very impressed by the successes of Cuba in spite of the US blockade which is almost on its 49th year now. Cuba has made great advances in health, education and in biotechnology which are known and admired worldwide. Its economy continues to register positive growth rate. We congratulate the Cuban people for all their successes and the courage to stand up for what they believe.

US imperialism has been staging continued attacks using various international and regional events to demonize Cuba , its leaders and people. The Bush plan for a regime change in Cuba shows his great ignorance of the Cuban people. Does he really believe the Cuban people will just give up the gains of the Cuban Revolution to imperialism without a resistance? Their history proved otherwise!

The 5 Cuban heroes are jailed for more than 9 years now in the U.S. prisons. Antonio Guerrero, Fernando Gonzales, Gerardo Hernandez, Ramon Labañino and Rene Gonzales who worked hard to prevent terrorists attack against their country initiated by the anti-Cuban terrorists in Miami and the CIA were arrested and jailed as terrorists on September 12, 1998 in the U.S.

While the 5 Cuban heroes remain in jail away isolated from their families and friends, international terrorist Luis Posada Carriles, was released by the Bush government in May 2007. It is really the height of irony that a notorious international terrorist who have committed heinous crimes, which include the blowing up of the civilian plane Cubana de Aviación off the coast of Barbados on October 8, 1976 which killed 73 innocent civilians, was set free. Posada Carriles was also involved in the Bay of Pigs Invasion, Iran-Contra scandal, the bombing of the tourist hotels in 1977 in Havana who killed an Italian tourist Favio di Celmo. He was also responsible for the assassination attempts on Fidel Castro, Operation Condor, the torture and murder or Venezuelan citizens, crimes against Nicaragua , El Salvador among others.

This came as no surprise since Luis Posada Carriles started working with George Bush Sr. when he headed the CIA. Posada Carriles terrorist career thereafter was supported by the succeeding US governments. He was privy to too many secrets as an agent of the US special services, so by releasing him, they thought that would keep those secrets forever hidden.

We demand that Luis Posada Carriles be extradited to Venezuela so he can be tried for his crimes against humanity.

We strongly demand an end to the brutal and longest running US blockade against Cuba , which caused so much suffering to the Cuban people. Cuba is not alone in fighting the blockade. At UN General Assembly last October 30, 2007, 184 member- countries voted to end the blockade, the 16th time the Resolution entitled Necessity to put an end to the United States commercial, financial and economic blockade against Cuba was voted overwhelmingly.

We also denounced the Bush plan for regime change in Cuba . Recently he called on the world to steer Cuba out of its "tropical Gulag" toward democracy. He added that he would create a "freedom fund" to promote democratic reforms in Cuba . Cuban Foreign Minister Felipe Perez Roque in response stated that Cuba considers the words of the U.S. President to herald "an unprecedented escalation in the anti-Cuba policy" of more blockade, more subversion, and more attempts at isolation. Fidel Castro describes it as a "re-conquest of Cuba by force"

We also strongly demand that the Cuban 5 heroes who are unjustly jailed in the US and isolated from their families and friends for more than 9 years now be released immediately.

Cuba is an inspiration to us. We admire its international solidarity with the poor countries of the world. It has sent doctors and teachers to train the local people to build their own health clinics and schools for the people. It donated medicines to victims of typhoon Reming in Bicol last year.

We firmly resolve to develop mutual solidarity between our peoples. We will actively campaign to end the US blockade and the Bush Plan for a regime change. Similarly we will actively campaign to free the Cuban 5 heroes.

We will support the activities and will join the Philippines-Cuba Friendship Association or Amistad and the Free the Cuban 5 Committee.

NO TO US BLOCKADE AG AIN ST CUBA ! NO TO THE BUSH PLAN FOR CUBA !

FREE THE CUBAN 5!

LONG LIVE THE FILIPINO AND CUBAN PEOPLES SOLIDARITY!
