Cuba Solidarity Meeting in Brazil

 

BRAZIL, June 9, 2009. The importance of victories and conquests of the Cuban Revolution for world peoples is the main issue of the opening session of the Fourth State Convention of Solidarity with Cuba in Rio de Janeiro.

Zuleide Faria de Melo, president of the Jose Marti-Rio de Janeiro Cultural Association (ACJM-RJ), told Prensa Latina the meeting is a tribute to the Cuban Revolution on the occasion of the 50th anniversary, and reaffirms Rio de Janeiro support of the Cuban people and government.

"Cuba has offered the peoples of the world great solidarity for 50 years, improving their levels of health and education, while showing the importance of that unconditional support and friendship," she stressed.

The leader also noted Cuba has held off unacceptable pressure and aggression by the US government, and is taking accelerated steps forwards the construction of a society where everyone, without distinction, equally receives the country's social benefits.

Faria de Melo recalled the ACJM-RJ emerged in 1983, in the last few years of the military dictatorship (1964-1985) in Brazil.

Its main aim at that time was to press the government for the re-establishment of diplomatic relations with the Caribbean island.

"Our main labor now is to try the release of five Cuban anti-terrorist fighters unfairly imprisoned in the United States for over 10 years, and the accusation of the Washington-imposed economic blockade almost 50 years ago," she stated.

The fourth State Convention of Solidarity with Cuba in Rio de Janeiro will be run in the Campus Praia Vermelha of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro-Forum on Science and Culture.

The meeting is in preparation for the National Convention of Solidarity with Cuba, starting Wednesday through Saturday in Florianopolis, capital of Santa Catarina state. (Cubaminrex- PL)
