Caravan of Solidarity with Cuba Tours Germany
GERMANY, June 12, 2009. A caravan made up by 30 cars and truck toured four important German cities -Bochum, Essen, Duisburg and Oberhausen- in the Ruhr Basin in the north of the country to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Cuban Revolution. The initiative was inspired by the historic Caravan of Victory that crossed Cuba in January 1959.
This display of solidarity with the Cuban people was organized by the FRG-Cuba Friendship Association, together with Humanitäre-Cuba Hilfe (Humanitarian Help for Cuba) NGO, the Communist Party of Germany, the Left Party in Oberhausen, the Büro Buchmesse Havanna –a group that coordinates the participation of leftist publishing houses in the International Book Fair of Havana- and the Junge Welt left-wing newspaper.
The vehicles carried billboards displaying messages related to the main achievements of the Cuban Revolution, the ALBA agreement, the help Cuba offers to third world countries, and their rejection of the genocidal blockade imposed on Cuba for almost 50 years by the United States.
One of the trucks showed a picture of Commander Che Guevara and the Cuban Five antiterrorist fighters who have been incarcerated in US jails for over 10 years. Spreading information about the case of the Cuban Five was one of the most important actions scheduled for Bochum and Oberhausen. Postcards addressed to the US President, Barack Obama, demanding the liberation of the five Cuban prisoners were handed out. (Cubaminrex- PL)
