II Convention of the Canadian Network of Solidarity with Cuba inaugurated in Toronto
CANADA, September 4, 2010. - Today in the morning was inaugurated in the city of Toronto the second biennial convention of the Canadian Network on Cuba (CNC), with the assistance of representatives of the organizations of solidarity with Cuba in Canada, the Committees for the release of the five Cubans imprisoned in the U.S., unions and leftist political parties in Canada.
The event was attended by the Ambassador of Cuba in Canada, Teresita Vicente Sotolongo, the vice president of ICAP Basilio Gutierrez, the General Consuls of Cuba in Toronto and Montreal and other officials of the Embassy and the ICAP invited to the event.
The CNC did a balance of the work done in these two years since the first Convention, highlighting the hard work for the liberation of the Cuban Five, for the lifting of the unjust and inhumane U.S. blockade against Cuba and the general solidarity with the Cuban people.
In her speech, Ambassador Teresita Vicente noted and appreciated the work done by the organizations of the CNC, while reiterating the importance of intensifying efforts and actions for the release of the Five, by denouncing through all possible ways and means the U.S. Government, demanding to President Obama to use his constitutional right to release the five Cubans unjustly convicted.
From his side, the Vice President of ICAP joined the appreciation for the many expressions of solidarity, the work done during this time highlighting the aid campaigns during the hurricanes, the fundraising campaign to help the Haitian people by sending the money to the Cuban doctors after the earthquake. Mr. Basilio also reiterated the importance of strengthening the campaign for the release of the Five.
The Convention of the CNC will continue the discussions on Sunday where they will work on the agenda for the next two years and to elect the new board that will lead the work of solidarity with Cuba in Canada. (Cubaminrex-Embacuba Canada)
