European Solidarity Brigade Arrives in Cuba

CUBA, July 6, 2010.- The Jose Marti European brigade in solidarity with Cuba arrived on Monday in Havana where they were welcomed by authorities of the Cuban Friendship Institute (ICAP).

During the welcoming ceremony at the Julio Antonio Mella International Camp in the Habana municipality of Caimito, ICAP Vice President Elio Gamez thanked the 122 members of the group for their support of Cuba.

The activists from 13 countries will stay until July 21 in Cuba.

During this period they will work in agricultural tasks and will participate in lectures, workshops and meetings with members of Cuban grass-roots organizations.

Maria da Conceicao Braga, of the Cuba-Portugal Association, said that with their presence in Cuba they are also demanding the release of Rene Gonzalez, Fernando Gonzalez, Gerardo Hernandez, Ramon Labañino and Antonio Guerrero, five Cuban antiterrorists who remain unjustly imprisoned in the United States since 1998 for monitoring anti-Cuba groups in South Florida that were planning and carrying out terrorist actions against the island.

David Gil, secretary of the Jose Marti Friendship with Cuba Association of Valencia, Spain, referred to their work among university students in his country to spread the truth about Cuba’s reality, “which is very different from what European media portray,” he noted.

Simon Heller, a German adolescent member of the brigade, said that Cuba, with an education and health system that benefits all Cuban citizens, is an alternative to the capitalist system. (Cubaminrex – ACN)
