British Personalities Reaffirm Solidarity with Cuba
CUBA, December 8th, 2010.- British personalities and trade union leaders participating in the annual Latin America 2010 conference in London reaffirmed their support of Cuba in the struggle against the US economic blockade imposed on the island for more than 50 years.
According to the website of the Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs (www.cubaminrex.cu), the event included three workshops on the Cuban reality with lectures and remarks by London’s former Mayor Ken Livingstone and by Jean Lambert, a member of the European Parliament and the British Green Party, among others.
The speakers noted that Cuba has become an inspiration for many countries of Latin America and for the whole world to undertake positive changes.
Also attending the meeting were the Cuban ambassador to the United Kingdom, Esther Armenteros, as well as Political and Economic counsellors, Luis Marron and Carlos Alfaro, respectively, who talked about the most recent events that are taking place in the island.
The nearly 500 participants in the event were updated on the case of the five Cuban antiterrorists unjustly imprisoned in the US since 1998.
Gerardo Hernandez, Fernando Gonzalez, Antonio Guerrero, Ramon Labañino and Rene Gonzalez –– internationally known as the Cuban Five ––, were irrationally accused and sentenced to harsh terms during a biased trial in which they were never proved guilty.
The Cuban Five were trying to prevent terrorist actions against Cuba by anti-Cuba right wing groups that, for decades, have planned sabotages, and terrorist and bacteriological attacks against the Cuban people. These kinds of attacks have killed thousands of people and have caused substantial harm to the Cuban economy.
The annual Latin America conferences have become one of the most successful events of their kind in the United Kingdom. Since December 2005, thousands of delegates from across the country have come to hear speakers from more than 30 countries discuss and share experiences of developments in the Caribbean and Latin America.
