Statement issued by the Friendship Association Suriname-Cuba with respect to the commemoration of the attack on the Moncada barracks in Santiago de Cuba on July 26 1953

The 26 of July lets us irrevocably think back to that day in 1953 when one  brave group of Cuban brothers, together with the Cuban people where fed up with the dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista, and took the decision to free the Cuban People of this yoke.

In spite of the unsuccessful attack on the Moncada Barracks in Santiago de Cuba which they undertook with the yacht the Granma from Tuxpan Veracruz in Mexico, the remaining 12 fighters including Fidel Castro, his brother Raul Castro, Camilo Cienfugos, and the Argentine doctor Ernesto Guevara (,,CHE”), persevered together with the support of the Cuban people, convinced of the just cause of their mission
This fierce battle finally resulted in Batista fleeing the country and the reconstruction of that beautiful country was made possible.

Despite the 50 years of economic blockade imposed by the Government of the United States of America, with the aim of weakening the economy of the country, and to create starvation, misery and a hopeless situation amongst the Cuban population and in that way bring about dissatisfaction and resistance within the Cuban revolution and amongst its leaders, the Cuban people have succeeded in developing the country which have taken Cuba to great heights.

Beside all efforts of destabilization the Government of the United States of America is keeping for 12 years 5 Cuban revolutionaries wrongfully imprisoned, namely: Gerardo Hernández, Ramón Labañino, Antonio Guerrero, Fernando González and René González.
These 5 Cuban heroes, better known as the Cuban-5, were infiltrated in terrorist anti-Cuban organizations in Miami in order to inform the home front in time of activities to be expected from United States territory. They were able to prevent many attacks on the Cuban people, which meant that many lives were saved.

In spite of fierce attempts of the world community the United States of America maintains its position that the Cuban-5 where spying for the Cuban government and refuses to give them a fair trial outside of Miami.

The Friendship association Suriname-Cuba on this occasion demands from the United States Government the immediate stop of all activities which go against the sovereignty and the right of self-determination of the Cuban people, and the unconditional release of the five Cuban heroes.

The Friendship Association on this day congratulates the heroic Cuban people and their leaders and confirms once again the solidarity between the Surinamese people and their Cuban brothers and sisters.

Long live the Cuban Revolution, Venceremos
