US Congressman Criticizes Blockade to Cuba

CUBA, May 5, 2010. Congressman Michael Honda, D-California, said the US blockade against Cuba was “imprudent”, published www.cubadebate.cu

Honda said that keeping the blockade was imprudent and “alienates the United States from the Latin American and Caribbean community”

In an article published in The Hill, US Congress newspaper, Honda said that after having recently travelled to Cuba with a Congress delegation, it had become evident to him that the his country’s blockade was politically, economically and socially imprudent.

“We met (in Cuba) with many people, Cuban officials, professional organizations, journalists, foreign diplomats and farmers, and we of us agreed on that point” he said.

Honda added that “the US economy greatly could benefit from better relations with Cuba but instead is devoted to alienate that potential ally”

He said that “now that Latin American countries have sided with Cuba, as the opening of the El Salvador and Costa Rica diplomatic offices prove, as well as Cuba’s integration to the Latin America and the Caribbean Community, the US can ruin their relations with countries that see the blockade as a retrograde policy”

“As a matter of fact -he added- the US are already alienated: the Latin America and the Caribbean Community explicitly forbids US participation”

Honda said that the blockade’s impact is significant and assured that “the longer we keep Cuba in the list of states that sponsor terrorism, a much criticized accusation by diplomats, the greater risks to our credibility and reputation in the region”
