Cuba Attends Victory Day Celebrations in Belarus.        

BELARUS, May 9, 2011.- Cuban diplomats attended a Monday gathering of veterans of the Great Patriotic War and the Belarusian people to celebrate the victory over fascism, the 66th anniversary of the Red Armyâ�Ös 1941-1945 epic feat.

  In a ceremony sponsored by the Georgi Zhukov Fund in Belarus, led by retired Col. Dmitry Zenkov, diplomats from Russia, Venezuela and Cuba were welcomed.

Zenkov also chairs the Association of Internationalist Combatants, participants in the October (Missile) Crisis.

At the ceremony, Cuban diplomats Alfredo Nieves Portuondo and Nelson Fundora Marchena laid wreaths in honor of the great Soviet Marshal and the soldiers that died in that great epic.

The event, organized at the monument to the most outstanding Soviet commander of the Great Patriotic War, Marshal Georgy Zhukov, was also attended by officers, cadets and students of military schools in Belarus.

Georgi Konstantinovich Zhukov was one of the key commanders of World War II and participated in almost all the decisive battles of the war.

He defended Moscow and Leningrad in 1941, broke the blockade of Leningrad in 1943, participated in the battles of Rzhev, Stalingrad and Kursk, and he led the liberation operation in Belarus, the Baltic republics and Poland.

The Soviet marshal finally won the battle of Berlin in 1945.
