SOLIDARITY MESSAGE
by
E. R. Francois
Your Excellency
Mr. President,
Cuban Collaborators,
Friends of Cuba,
Welcome.
Friday the 28th of January 2011, marked the 158th anniversary of the birth of Cuba’s premier National Hero – José Marti.
A literary prodigy, Marti published his first newspaper at the age of sixteen (16), and, by the time of his death at the age of forty-two (42) in 1895 he had – through prose, poetry and speech – carved into the collective psyche of his countrymen the Cuban character we embrace today... a Caribbean Nation fiercely independent and steeped in national pride.
But it is the sense of social justice for which Marti fought – reaching out to the poor and the weak... the oppressed... which has enabled us, today, toshare and enjoy, with PRIDE, RESPECT, AND JOY, the life of an African Icon – NELSON MANDELA – Free today mainly because of the action of the Cuban Nation in resisting and defeating mi9litarily the racist apartheid system which imprisoned him and which received its support from several western governments.
...and it is this sense of Social Justice which has opened up opportunities for the growth of remarkable individuals such as President Hugo Chavez Frias of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, and who, in consultation with the revered Commandante Fidel Castro Ruz, formulated and promoted the Bolivarian Alternative for Latin America and the Caribbean – a system of economic development that seeks to ensure the total development of member countries through the implementation of complementary trade agreements.
To understand José Marti is to share the graceful beauty of the flower as it blooms, to ride with the malfinis (hawk) as it lazily, gracefully slices through the sky, to speak with equal passion about a woman’s beauty... and brutal wars of independence, to recognize that your Nation is the canvas across which you will splash your Soul....
Understand José Marti and you will recognize the Spirit of the Cuban nation – born in 1959 – and which, from birth has been a catalyst for change in the political, social, and economic life of the western hemisphere...
ONE DAY SAINT LUCIA, TOO, WILL RECOGNIZE ITS OWN JOSÉ MARTI
