Minister of Health Meets with Members of the Operación Milagros Brigade.
SAINT LUCIA, 23 March 2011.- The Minister of Health, Dr. Keith Mondesir and a team from that Ministry received the members of the Operación Milagros Brigade at their main office; who work at the Ophthalmological Center, opened in the country in 2009 with the collaboration of Cuba. On the part of the Cubans, Dr. Barbarita Rodríguez, Head of Medical Collaboration and the Ambassador of Cuba on the island, Lydia González also participated in the meeting.
The Minister of Health thanked Cuba especially for the excellence and professionalism from the Health workers and the spirit of selflessness and self sacrifice that had made the high level of education that Cuba possesses today, under the direction of its leader. Mondesir highlighted the importance of the work being completed at the Ophthalmological Center, the only of its kind in the country, which right now counts on the support from a Retina Specialist, because of the high incidence of Retinal pathologies due to Diabetes in the island’s population. On that issue, Dr. Mondesir signaled that the possibility of counting on a Retina Specialist, also a result of Cuba´s collaboration, is a luxury for a country in the Eastern Caribbean.
The Operación Milagros Brigade, composed of 15 collaborators, has accumulated in their two years of work 4338 surgical procedures, with which, in the words of the Minister of Health, soon the Saint Lucian people will no longer have to suffer from blindness through preventable causes.
