Solidarity Organizations Mark 50th Anniversary of Bay of Pigs Victory.

CUBA, April 15th, 2011.- Solidarity with Cuba organizations in the United Kingdom and Sweden marked the 50th anniversary of the Cuban victory over the Bay of Pigs mercenary invasion.

Hundreds of Briton friends gathered at the National Union of Teachers (NTU) main theater to mark the historic deed, in an event organized by NTU, the largest European teachers’ union, according to Cuban diplomatic sources in London.

NTU’s Deputy General Secretary Kevin Courtney spoke of Cuba´s role as an example to the world that a better world is possible. He was backed up on this statement by Andrew Murray and Bernard Regan, President of the Stop the War Coalition and Secretary of the Solidarity with Cuba campaign, respectively.

Their speeches were also a call for peace, a condemnation to the US blockade against Cuba and a demand to the US government to release the five Cuban antiterrorist unjustly incarcerated in the United States.

Cuba was represented at the meeting by Ambassador to the UK Esther Armenteros Cardenas, Commander Victor Dreke, who fought in Bay of Pigs and was a special guest at the event, as well as members of the Cuban diplomatic corps.

In the Cuban embassy in Stockholm there was a cultural event to commemorate the date attended by MP and poet Bengt Berg and many members of the Swedish press and culture personalities.

The ceremony began with the introductory words of Ambassador Francisco Florentino, who was followed by a concert by Cubans Karla Martínez (piano)  and Mónica Betancourt (violin), a duo that is in Sweden as part of a cultural exchange with the Gothenburg Music Institute.

President of the Cuba-Sweden Friendship Association in Stockholm Eva Bjorklung delivered a speech, followed by poetry reading and songs by several of the artists gathered at the embassy. (Cubaminrex-AIN)
