Cuba Demands Political Will for Copenhagen Meet

United Nations, November 17, 2009. Cuba held developed countries responsible for the stagnation of negotiations for the summit on climate change in Copenhagen on December 7-18.

The reason for it lies on the US lack of political will to commit itself to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, Acting Cuban Permanent Representative to the UN Rodolfo Benitez said.

He added these reductions must be proportional to its historical and current responsibilities and in line with parameters suggested by scientific assessments.

In his speech before the General Assembly about the follow-up to big conferences, Benitez also criticized the industrialized nations' refusal to contribute resources and technologies needed for developing countries to face climate change.

The Cuban diplomat lamented it may be unlikely to achieve expected results in Copenhagen, as well as the new postponement of demanded concrete binding commitments.

In this regard, he warned that "the way we confront climate change today will have a direct effect on development prospects of most of humankind."

However, he asserted that a just, balanced agreement on climate change is still possible if the process of negotiations is approached with a new political attitude.

Benitez termed crucial the UN role in following up big conferences in the current context of multiple crises, mainly in the economic and financial fields. (Cubaminrex- PL)
