United Nations Recognizes Cuban Female Advances

CUBA, March 8, 2007.- Susan MacDade, resident coordinator of the UN system in Cuba, recognized on Thursday that Cuban women enjoy increasing equity in the last five decades.

"Fortunately, this country has been able to overcome unfavorable situations for women, such as inequality in accessing education, health, and services," MacDade told Prensa Latina.

After referring to the Revolution s benefits for women, she said the challenge for contemporary Cuban society is to face up to people s aging, especially in women, to guarantee their living conditions..

She said one of every three Cubans, mostly women, will be 60 years old or older in the year 2050, which will be a great challenge for social security in this country, as has happened in other nations.

MacDade expressed her concern about population reduction, because if couples have fewer than two children, they do not reproduce their numbers, which will bring other problems for development.

The UN representative said the Island is part of the small group of developing countries with low fertility rates, which will demand new social policies to face the phenomenon. (Cubaminrex-PL)
