CHINA, August 19, 2008. Cuban Osleydis Menendez, World record holder and Athens Olympic champion in javelin, qualified this Tuesday to the finals with a 60.51 meters shot in the athletics championships in Beijing. Menendez, also the Olympic record holder (71.53) showed to the contest out of shape and could not throw the requested mark of 61.50 meters in pool A. Nevertheless, the Cuban athlete finished in the 11 position, thus securing her presence in the finals at the Bird´s Nest. In pool A Barbora Spotakova (CZE-67.69), Steffi Nerius (GER- 63.94), Maria Abakumova (RUS-63.48), Mercedes Chilla (ESP-61.81), Li Zhang (CHN-61.77)and Sinta Ozolina (LAT-60.13) also qualified. In pool B Christina Obergfoll (GER-67.52), Goldie Sayers (GBR-62.99), Barbara Madejczyk (POL-62.81), Katharina Molitor (GER- 60.92) and Felicea Moldovan-Tilea (ROU-60.81) passed to the finals as well.
