Brazilian President Opens Latin American Summit

HAVANA, Cuba, Dec 16 (acn) Brazil’s President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva inaugurated the First Latin American and Caribbean Summit, in Salvador de Bahia, with the attendance of most heads of state in the region.

The Summit, which focuses on regional integration and development, is taking place at the Costa de Sauipe beach resort, 75 kilometers from the city of Salvador de Bahia.

The Latin American and Caribbean leaders will consider serious issues, such as the current world financial crisis, increasing food process, trade, climate change and natural disasters, in a meeting that does not have the interference of any extra-regional powers.

The principles of solidarity and cooperation will be stressed on the final document to be issued by sub-regional gathering, according to several media outlets.

In the final document, the heads of government will insist in the need to approach close positions in order to face the global crisis, under the respect for international law, special treatment of the most vulnerable economies and the rejection of coercive and unilateral measures, like the US economic, financial and commercial blockade of Cuba.
