Caribbean Leaders Continue to Arrive in Cuba for CARICOM Summit

CUBA, December 7, 2008. The heads of state and government of the Caribbean Community continue to arrive in this eastern city to take place at the 3rd Cuba-CARICOM Summit, that will be held on Monday.

Some of the leaders that are already in Santiago de Cuba include David Thompson, Barbados’ Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Economic Issues and Development; Tillman Thomas, Prime Minister of Grenada; Bharrat Jagdeo, Prime Minister of Guyana; Ralph Gonsalves, Prime Minister of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines; Roosevelt Skerrit, Prime Minister of Dominica; Patrick Manning, Prime Minister of Trinidad-Tobago and Hubert A. Ingraham, Prime Minister of Bahamas.

All the PMs are being accompanied by their foreign ministers and other cabinet members.

Misael Enamorado, member of the Political Bureau of Cuba’s Communist Party and First Secretary of the political organization in Santiago de Cuba welcomed the Caribbean leaders at the Antonio Maceo International Airport.

Other CARICOM leaders are expected to arrive soon, as well the General Secretary of the regional bloc, Edwin W. Carrington; the Secretary General of the Association of Caribbean States, Luis Fernando Falla and the Director General of the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States, Len Ismael.

The Cuba-CARICOM Summit will open sessions Monday at 9:00 am local Cuba Time, at the Santiago Hotel. Major issues on the meeting’s agenda include the world financial, energy, food and environmental crisis and its impact on Caribbean countries; Cuba and CARICOM towards the next Latin American and Caribbean Summit on Integration and Development, to take place in Brazil; Cuba-CARICOM relations and their prospects.
