Chileans Demand Action to End US Blockade Against Cuba

CUBA, November 3, 2008. Chilean Solidarity with Cuba organizations urged their government to play a more active role in the international demands to lift the US blockade against the island.

The leaders of several organizations agreed to pressure their government into taking more actions in favor of Cuba after the UN General Assembly nearly unanimously supported a resolution to end the US economic, financial, and commercial blockade imposed against the island.

Idania Ramos, representing the Cuban Friendship Institute (ICAP) also participated in the meeting, briefing participants on the current situation in Cuba especially in the wake of Hurricanes Gustav and Ike that significantly damaged the country's economy and infrastructure. She also spoke about the recent UN vote against the US blockade and the case of the five antiterrorist Cubans unfairly imprisoned in US jails.

The meeting also agreed to promote regional integration in Latin America as a way to boost progress and development by encouraging initiatives such as the Bolivarian Alternative for the Americas (ALBA), reported PL news agency.

Also participating in the meeting were representatives from the Cuban Friendship Center in Viña del Mar, and from the Jose Marti center of Valparaíso. Members of solidarity committees in Quillota and Quilpue also joined the event. (Cubaminrex- ACN)
