Commemoration of third anniversary of Operation Milagro in Suriname

SURINAME. October 14, 2008. The third anniversary of Milagro Operation was celebrated at the Embassy of Cuba in Suriname. It started on October 10, 2005.

The Surinamese eye patients first received ophthalmological treatment in hospitals in Havana and Cienfuegos. In 2007, however, the ophthalmologic surgeries were performed in‘Slands Hospital, a state hospital in Paramaribo. In July this year a Cuban team of ten specialists resumed the ophthalmological operations at this hospital.

In his speech Andrés González Garrido, Ambassador of Cuba in Suriname, stated that the date of October 10, which is the anniversary of Operation Milagro in Suriname, is also very important to Cubans because it is the day on which Cuba’s wars against colonialism and slavery started.

The Ambassador said that Operation Milagro is an initiative of the Presidents Fidel Castro Ruz and Hugo Chávez Frias under the ALBA initiative. Under the umbrella of Operation Miracle 4,456 Surinamese patients have been operated, and around 13,000 were checked.

The commemoration was also attended by Dr. Celsius Waterberg, minister of Public Health and other officials of the health ministry; Yvonne Raveles – Resida, member of the National Assembly of Suriname; members of the Friendship Committee Suriname-Cuba; officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Suriname; some parents of Surinamese students in Cuba; former Surinamese students in Cuba, and officials of the Venezuelan embassy in Suriname, among others.
